Form from Flow

Yeah! Another completed painting. This is turning into a productive year. Here for your enjoyment, contemplation, and perusal is the finished painting that I showed in progress a few weeks ago.

The geometry of the nothingness of space can be described mathematically as an infinite tetrahedral array which weaves the fabric upon which ordinary matter builds the structures we recognize as the physical world. Here the flow of space-time resolves into a primordial tetrahedron amid metaphysical cosmic energy.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. What do you see?

Title this Work, Win a Print

Sometimes the hardest part in creating art is coming up with a good title that is engaging and gives insight into my process or invites contemplation. I’m looking for fresh titles.

Give your ideas for a title for this print. Winner is entirely up to me and will receive a free print provided they have a domestic USA shipping address. (No need to give your address, unless you are the winner.)

Enter your suggestions in the comments. Contest runs simultaneously on my blog and Facebook page. There will be one winner chosen on Sunday, August 30, 2015.

Soul Mates

In Quantum Physics there is a phenomenon called Quantum Entanglement which I think – metaphorically and perhaps actually – corresponds to the experience of the Soul Mate in that in each phenomenon the components are paired so that one can no longer be completely described without reference to its counterpart – even at such degrees of separation that common logic assures that any contact or communication is impossible.

I hope you enjoy this mysterious and dynamic image.

From Print to Painting

I liked the recent print I made so much that it inspired this new large painting, Origin of Form #2.

I normally use photographs of my paintings in various progressive stages combined with each other and other images such as public domain astronomical photographs and manipulated in Photoshop to produce the original digital art for the prints. I am finalizing a whole series of them.  The paintings feed the prints and I now see the prints as fully resolved studies for future paintings.

It is an exciting creative dynamic.

Origin of Form

The world we know is built on triangles, mathematically speaking.

To determine how space sculpts itself, physicists describe its shape using triangles and their higher-dimensional analogues. A triangle is 2 dimensional and is the simplest shape that can be made in 2 dimensions.

Perhaps more easily visualized is the tetrahedron, the 3 dimensional form of a triangle with 4 triangular sides. Can you see that this is the most basic form possible in our world of 3 physical dimensions? Add anything and it becomes more complex. Take away anything and it collapses into 2 dimensions. I like to paint tetrahedrons (here and here) even if they are just painted on the 2 dimensional surface of the canvas.

That’s what scientists do too – as they postulate multidimensional realities of spacetime with projected representations in 2 dimensional drawings. A four dimensional world is based on a pentachoron, the 4  dimensional analogue of at the triangle. And on up into more complex dimensions. It all works mathematically but we’ll never concretely experience those because our senses work only in our 3 D world.

Fun Fact:  Near the Planck scale (really, really small), spacetime itself is 2 D.

I don’t usually say too much about my images, preferring to allow you to make up your own story.  Here, contemplation of such things lead to the creation of this work.

This image is the formation of a triangle in 2D. Don’t ask me what is making it. Maybe those are the  one dimensional vibrating strings of String Theory. Unknowably changed somewhat – in color at least – by the process.

And is that the Eye of Providence?
